Where have I been? from Crayon Box Quilt Studio

I don't think any blogger means to not post for almost 2 months.  Certainly I don't but sometimes life gets in the way of things we want to do.  What have I been up to lately?

Sunshine hasn't had any motivation to work on the new quilt for her bed so when I asked if she wanted help, she readily said Yes.  At the rate she was going, this quilt was never going to get done.  All of the blocks are sewn and I'm working on adding the faces before I add the sashing and border ...

The Ella Quilt by Kitchen Table Quilting from Dizzy Quilts

I'm not sure how I didn't buy the Ella Quilt pattern when it first came out because I love the design! And of course I can't remember when I saw this pattern again or what prompted me to buy it this time around, but when I was making my sewing plans for the first quarter of 2021, it needed to be part of those plans.

The pattern requires a background fabric (I used Kona Ash) and 8 fat quarters. I really like that as far as colours and prints, anything goes really for this pattern. I had ...

Lotus Blossoms Quilt from Dizzy Quilts

My first finish of 2021! To be honest, 2020 was such a weird and crazy year, I'm really happy to be writing about a 2021 finish!

Over the last few months of 2020, I've really been struggling with the quantity of quilts and garments I've been making. I obviously don't need all the quilts I've made and I'm working from home so how many garments do I really need? BUT sewing is how I relax, how I take my mind off work and how I stay sane. So stopping really isn't an option ...

A Pair of Mask Baskets for Erica from Crayon Box Quilt Studio

This is the last round of mask baskets I made recently. They were for my friend Erica.

Her kids love rainbows and the striped fabric was the closest I could get. I chose a pale Sage print for the outside of the first basket.
And I used the striped fabric for the lining.
For the 2nd basket, I put the striped fabric on the outside.
The lining was this fun blue print with crabs, butterflies, sea shells, star fish and sea gulls.
I'm glad that they will help them organize their masks like they have for us.  We're ...

Ethan's I Spy Quilt from Crayon Box Quilt Studio

My neighbor's two year old son Ethan was recently diagnosed with a serious but treatable kidney cancer and he's currently going through chemo treatments.  I wanted to make him a quilt to cuddle with while he's at the hospital so I whipped up a cute I Spy quilt.
I delved into my cut brick scraps and used everything I could find that wasn't Pink and girly.  In my hurry to get it completed, I forgot to snap a "before" picture before I started quilting it but I did remember to take a pic when I finished ...

A Trio of Mask Baskets for Lisa from Crayon Box Quilt Studio

My friend Lisa asked if I could make a trio of mask baskets for her and her daughter and I was apply to oblige. Luckily I had a beautiful day for taking the pictures.
She asked if I could possibly use Blue and/or Teal as those are her daughter's favorite colors and nothing overly floral.  I think these fit the bill nicely.

For the first one I chose a Blue print fabric with random stars.
The lining was a Cream marble print.
I don't have Teal in my stash so this was as close as I could ...

Kelly Quilt Finish from Dizzy Quilts

About a month ago, I'm quietly sitting with my morning coffee, going through my blog feed when I land on a new pattern release by Erica Jackman of Kitchen Table Quilting: the Kelly Quilt. The design and the fabrics Erica used for her sample were just so beautiful, I knew I had to have it.

Almost as soon as I downloaded the pattern, I started planning which fat quarters I would use and in which colour way. I thought maybe purples, then I looked through my stash for pinks or reds. In the end, I decided to go with ...

Mask baskets for Sharon from Crayon Box Quilt Studio

After seeing my Masks Managed posts, a few friends asked if I could make mask baskets for them. These are the first 2, for my friend Sharon.

Disney villains are a huge favorite in her house so it went without saying that one of her baskets needed to be made with the Disney villains fabric that I had.
The portraits fabric worked well for the interior.
I really wanted to use the purple print for the outside and I'm very happy with the way it turned out.
Sharon asked for 2 baskets, one for the adult size masks and ...

Another "Giant Blocks" Quilt Finish from Dizzy Quilts

Back in November last year, I made a small quilt based on Kitchen Table Quilting's Giant Blocks series. I loved making that quilt so much, when I was planning my to make list for this Summer, I added another Giant Blocks quilt to it.

This is the August block which is crazy simple to sew, but when you put a few of them together in a quilt (in this case 9), they create a really striking design.

When I was planning which fabrics I would use to make this, I misread the tutorial and thought I needed four different ...

A Pink Postage Plus Quilt Finish from Dizzy Quilts

My husband owns an old classic car - a 1968 Dodge Coronet which he just loves. He is constantly tinkering with it, fixing this and that and to help him, he's good friends with a mechanic. This friend has spent a lot of time on the car and during one of his visits, hubby discovered that his wife is a crafter and a huge fan of the colour pink. So to thank them, he asked me to make her a quilt.

I was already planning to revisit the Postage Plus quilt pattern from the book Modern Plus Sign Quilts by ...

The Closet Case Pouf from Dizzy Quilts

I think I may have solved part of my scrap problem!

I subscribe to Closet Case Patterns' newsletter and love their garment patterns (I made the Cielo top a couple of times as well as their Pietra pants). Well, if you're a newsletter subscriber, you get access to a fantastic free pattern for a pouf you stuff with your fabric scraps... how cool is that?!

I used quilting cotton to make the pouf, but the instructions recommend interfacing the fabric if you aren't using something really sturdy such as canvas or leather. I had a yard of the ...

Teller's Firetrucks Quilt from Crayon Box Quilt Studio

Sometimes making a quilt just to use up leftovers turns out to be a good thing.
Last year, after I made the Courage Under Fire quilt for our friend Pete, I didn't want to put the scraps back in my stash or scrap bins yet again so I hunted down an idea to use them up.  I came across The Long and Short of It by Barbara Esposito on the Moda Bake Shop and decided to use that pattern, though I opted for the optional layout.  FYI...Moda recently moved the Bake Shop off that platform so the instructions ...

Jackson's Baby Quilt from Dizzy Quilts

There's a new baby in my extended family! My daughter-in-law's sister had a baby boy back in May and I had planned on making her a quilt, but with the whole COVID situation, there were very long delays in fabric deliveries so I didn't finish this little quilt until late June. I took these pictures as soon as it was finished, but I'm only getting around to blogging about it now!

I'm sorry about the weird shading - it was incredibly sunny and didn't notice these until much later!

I didn't use a pattern ...

American Beauty table runner fnish from Crayon Box Quilt Studio

I finally made time to quilt and bind my American Beauty table runner and now it's gracing my dining room table for the summer.
This is an old UFO that started with these patriotic Blackford's Beauty blocks for the Celebrate Red, White and Blue blog hop way back in July 2012.

Almost 8 years ago to the day I put the blocks together and added the borders for the blog hop photo shoot.  Sadly, this wasn't my oldest UFO.
I even got my little helpers to hold it for a pic.  They were soooooo little then.  Jammer ...

Allegro Pants - Lessons Learned from Dizzy Quilts

I haven't really ventured much into pants sewing (I only tried one pair and although it was somewhat successful, the fit was far from perfect). Pants are hard to fit due to tummies, bums and thighs, but I really want to nail the fit on some comfy pants - I mean, I'll be working from home for the foreseeable future, might as well have some cute comfy pants!

The Allegro Bottoms pattern by Love Notions was completely re-drafted and was on sale a little while ago. It comes with two lengths for shorts and pants as well as two ...

Line Dance Quilt Finish from Dizzy Quilts

I'm back with yet another charm square quilt! I can't believe how many of those charm packs I still have in my stash - many of which I probably will never use. However, I just love the colours in this one - Summersville Spring by Lucie Summers for Moda.

The pattern is one I downloaded forever ago from the Moda Bakeshop - it is called "Line Dance" and was designed by Kathy Mack from Pink Chalk Studios. This was a really quick quilt to sew together, especially if you don't over-think the placement of each charm square. I think I ...

Large Star Bright Quilt Finish from Dizzy Quilts

A couple of weeks ago, I really needed a quick and simple project to work on. I started looking through the quilt patterns I already had on hand and found this one which I used a few months ago for a new Christmas tree skirt. I knew this one would a good one to work on! I even found a gorgeous stack of 10" squares to make it.

The fabric is Nature Walk by Tamara Kate. I purchased these from Tamara at a craft fair a few years ago. The prints are absolutely gorgeous and I'm so pleased this ...

New Comfy PJs Using M7515 from Dizzy Quilts

I made myself some new comfy PJs!

I've had this fabric in my stash for a long time and I was planning on making clothes for the grand-kids with it, but I had a lot of it and figured I could make myself some pyjamas and still have big enough pieces left to make something for them. This is a Cloud 9 cotton knit called Sidewalk by Rae Hoekstra. It is super soft!

The pattern I used is McCall's M7515. It is really easy and quick to make.

The shorts are only two pieces - the elastic casing is ...

A New Playmat for Ella from Dizzy Quilts

I'm continuing to work on my goal of using up the fabric I've had in my stash for a long time and this week, I've got another quilt made from charm squares.

The pattern is a tutorial I found in Pinterest. It is called Fresh Diamonds by Samelia's Mum. This is a pretty easy make, but not really a quick make - 156 HSTs to piece and trim! But it was well worth the effort because I really like the finished quilt.

The charm squares are an older Bonnie and Camille collection: Vintage Modern which has the ...

Easy Charm Squares Quilt Finish from Dizzy Quilts

At the start of 2020, one of my goals for the year was to re-organize my sewing room. If you've been following my blog for a bit, you'll know that I started garment sewing and I now feel like I need to get better organized - fabric is all over the place in my sewing room and I need to find a storage solution for all the Big 4 and the PDF patterns I've acquired.

I was going through my stash of precuts and I realized I still have A LOT of charm square packs - some of which ...
